Autism is a lifelong developmental disability.  It is not something people grow out of, or something you can cure, despite what you may hear!

Autism affects how people perceive the world and interact with those around them.

It is a spectrum as although people may share some difficulties, how this affects them will be different and how they cope will be different.

There are misunderstandings – thanks to Rain Man and other movies

  • Children with autism do not ever make eye contact – myth
  • Everyone with autism has a special gift (eg can tell you what day a certain date ten years ago fell on without looking at a calendar) – myth

There is a common saying “if you have met one autistic person, you have met one autistic person”.  No two are alike in the same way that no two other people are alike.
